A Step-by-Step Guide on Manual WordPress Update Process with Rank Math

A Step-by-Step Guide on Manual WordPress Update Process with Rank Math

WordPress is a popular content management system that powers millions of websites around the world. It is constantly evolving, with regular updates being released to improve security, fix bugs, and introduce new features. Updating your WordPress installation is crucial to ensure the smooth functioning of your website and to keep it secure from potential vulnerabilities.

In this article, we will guide you through the manual WordPress update process using Rank Math, a powerful SEO plugin that can help optimize your website for search engines. By following these steps, you can ensure a seamless update process without any disruptions to your website’s performance.

Step 1: Backup Your Website

Before proceeding with any updates, it is essential to create a backup of your website. This step is crucial as it allows you to restore your website to its previous state in case anything goes wrong during the update process. There are several backup plugins available for WordPress, such as UpdraftPlus and BackupBuddy, which can help you create a complete backup of your website.

Step 2: Update Plugins and Themes

Before updating WordPress itself, it is recommended to update all your plugins and themes to their latest versions. Outdated plugins and themes can pose security risks and may not be compatible with the latest version of WordPress. To update your plugins and themes, go to the “Plugins” or “Appearance” section in your WordPress dashboard and click on the “Update” button next to each plugin or theme that has an available update.

Step 3: Put Your Website in Maintenance Mode

To prevent any disruptions to your website’s functionality during the update process, it is advisable to put your website in maintenance mode. This will display a temporary message to your visitors, informing them that your website is undergoing maintenance. Rank Math provides a built-in maintenance mode feature that you can enable by going to the “Rank Math” section in your WordPress dashboard and clicking on the “General Settings” tab. From there, you can enable the maintenance mode and customize the message that will be displayed to your visitors.

Step 4: Download the Latest Version of WordPress

To manually update WordPress, you need to download the latest version from the official WordPress website. Visit wordpress.org and click on the “Get WordPress” button to download the latest version as a zip file. Once downloaded, extract the zip file to a folder on your computer.

Step 5: Deactivate Rank Math Plugin

Before proceeding with the WordPress update, it is recommended to deactivate the Rank Math plugin temporarily. This step ensures that there are no conflicts or compatibility issues during the update process. To deactivate Rank Math, go to the “Plugins” section in your WordPress dashboard, find Rank Math in the list of installed plugins, and click on the “Deactivate” button.

Step 6: Replace WordPress Core Files

Using an FTP client or the file manager provided by your hosting provider, connect to your website’s server. Navigate to the root directory of your WordPress installation, which is usually named “public_html” or “www.” Delete all the files and folders in this directory, except for the “wp-content” folder and the “wp-config.php” file. Now, upload all the files and folders from the extracted WordPress zip file to your website’s root directory.

Step 7: Reactivate Rank Math Plugin

After successfully replacing the WordPress core files, you can reactivate the Rank Math plugin. Go to the “Plugins” section in your WordPress dashboard, find Rank Math in the list of installed plugins, and click on the “Activate” button. Rank Math will automatically detect the updated WordPress version and adjust its settings accordingly.

Step 8: Run Database Update

Sometimes, a WordPress update may require changes to your website’s database structure. To ensure that your database is up to date, go to the “Rank Math” section in your WordPress dashboard and click on the “Status & Tools” tab. From there, click on the “Database Tools” button and follow the instructions to run the necessary database updates.

Step 9: Test Your Website

After completing the manual WordPress update process, it is crucial to thoroughly test your website to ensure that everything is functioning correctly. Check all the pages, posts, forms, and any other interactive elements on your website to make sure they are working as expected. Additionally, test any Rank Math features or settings that you have implemented to ensure they are still functioning properly.

By following these step-by-step instructions, you can manually update your WordPress installation with Rank Math without any hassle. Remember to always create a backup of your website before performing any updates and regularly update your plugins, themes, and WordPress core to keep your website secure and up to date.
