Apache attack helicopter likely to be equipped with APKWS II guided rockets in UK

The Apache attack helicopter is a formidable weapon in the arsenal of any military force. With its ability to fly low and fast, it can deliver devastating firepower to enemy targets on the ground. Now, the UK Ministry of Defence is looking to equip its Apache helicopters with a new weapon system that will make them even more lethal: the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II (APKWS II) guided rocket.

The APKWS II is a laser-guided rocket that can be fired from a variety of aircraft, including helicopters like the Apache. It is designed to be highly accurate, with a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 1 meter. This means that it can hit targets with pinpoint precision, minimizing collateral damage and reducing the risk of civilian casualties.

The rocket is also highly versatile, with a range of warhead options that can be tailored to different mission requirements. It can be used against a wide range of targets, including vehicles, buildings, and personnel. And because it is a guided weapon, it can be fired from a safe distance, reducing the risk to the helicopter and its crew.

The UK Ministry of Defence has been testing the APKWS II on its Apache helicopters since 2018, and the results have been promising. In a recent demonstration, the rocket was fired from an Apache helicopter at a moving target on the ground, hitting it with pinpoint accuracy.

The decision to equip the Apache with the APKWS II is part of a wider effort by the UK military to modernize its weapons systems and improve its capabilities on the battlefield. The Apache is already one of the most advanced attack helicopters in the world, with a range of weapons and sensors that make it highly effective in a variety of roles. But by adding the APKWS II to its arsenal, it will become even more lethal and versatile.

The UK is not the only country to recognize the potential of the APKWS II. The rocket has already been used by the US military in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, where it has proven to be highly effective against insurgent targets. It has also been exported to a number of other countries, including Jordan, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates.

Overall, the addition of the APKWS II to the Apache helicopter is a significant development for the UK military. It will give the country’s armed forces a powerful new weapon system that can be used in a variety of missions, from counter-terrorism operations to conventional warfare. And with its high accuracy and versatility, it will help to minimize collateral damage and reduce the risk of civilian casualties, making it a valuable tool for any military force.
