Canada’s Department of National Defence Orders Space Surveillance Micro Satellite

Canada’s Department of National Defence (DND) recently announced the purchase of a space surveillance micro satellite. This small satellite is part of a larger effort to increase the country’s ability to monitor and protect its space assets.

The satellite, named Sapphire, is a small CubeSat, measuring 10x10x30 cm and weighing just 2.5 kg. It was designed and built by the Canadian company Neptec Design Group. Sapphire is equipped with a high-resolution camera and a suite of sensors that will allow it to detect and track other satellites in orbit. The satellite will also be able to detect and track objects on the ground, such as missiles or aircraft.

The Sapphire satellite will be launched into a low-Earth orbit, where it will be used to monitor and protect Canada’s space assets. In addition to tracking other satellites, the satellite will be able to detect and identify objects on the ground, such as missiles or aircraft. This will give Canada an unprecedented level of situational awareness in space.

The Sapphire satellite is part of a larger effort by the DND to increase Canada’s ability to monitor and protect its space assets. The DND has also announced plans to launch a larger satellite, called Radarsat Constellation Mission (RCM), which will provide more detailed images of the Earth’s surface. The RCM will be used to monitor and protect Canadian military assets, as well as providing valuable data for civilian applications such as disaster management, agricultural monitoring, and maritime surveillance.

The purchase of the Sapphire satellite is an important step forward for Canada’s space capabilities. The satellite will provide Canada with an unprecedented level of situational awareness in space, allowing the country to better protect its assets and interests. The purchase of the satellite also demonstrates Canada’s commitment to developing its own space capabilities, rather than relying on other countries for access to space.
