China has been making significant strides in space exploration in recent years, and its latest ambitious plan involves conducting a lunar far side sample return mission in 2024. This mission, if successful, will make China the third country to bring back lunar samples, following the United States and the Soviet Union.

The lunar far side, also known as the dark side of the moon, is the hemisphere that is never visible from Earth due to tidal locking. It has long been a mystery to scientists, and exploring this uncharted territory could provide valuable insights into the moon’s geological history and shed light on the formation and evolution of our solar system.

China’s lunar exploration program, known as the Chang’e program, has already achieved several milestones. The Chang’e-1 mission in 2007 marked China’s first lunar probe, followed by Chang’e-2 in 2010, which successfully completed a flyby of the moon. Chang’e-3 in 2013 became the first Chinese spacecraft to land on the moon, and it deployed a rover called Yutu, or Jade Rabbit, to explore the lunar surface.

In 2019, China made history with the Chang’e-4 mission, becoming the first country to land a spacecraft on the far side of the moon. This groundbreaking achievement opened up new possibilities for scientific exploration and paved the way for future missions.

The upcoming lunar far side sample return mission, Chang’e-6, is part of China’s long-term plan to establish a lunar research base and eventually send astronauts to the moon. The mission aims to collect samples from a previously unexplored region called the South Pole-Aitken Basin, which is believed to contain ancient rocks that could provide crucial information about the moon’s early history.

To accomplish this ambitious goal, China plans to launch a series of missions. The first step is Chang’e-5, scheduled for late 2020, which will be a sample return mission from the near side of the moon. This mission will test the technology and capabilities required for a successful sample return.

Following the success of Chang’e-5, China will proceed with Chang’e-6, which will target the lunar far side. The mission will involve a lander and a rover, similar to previous missions, but with enhanced capabilities to navigate the challenging terrain of the far side.

Once on the lunar surface, the rover will collect samples and conduct various scientific experiments. The samples will then be sealed in a container and launched back to Earth using an ascent vehicle. The ascent vehicle will rendezvous with an orbiter in lunar orbit, which will then return to Earth carrying the precious lunar samples.

Bringing back lunar samples from the far side of the moon is a complex and challenging endeavor. The mission requires precise navigation, communication, and autonomous capabilities to overcome the lack of direct line-of-sight with Earth. It also demands robust sample collection and containment systems to ensure the integrity of the samples during the return journey.

The scientific community eagerly anticipates the results of China’s lunar far side sample return mission. The analysis of these samples could provide valuable insights into the moon’s geological history, including its volcanic activity, impact cratering, and potential water resources. It could also help scientists better understand the moon’s role in the formation and evolution of our solar system.

China’s ambitious plan to conduct a lunar far side sample return in 2024 demonstrates its commitment to advancing space exploration and expanding our knowledge of the moon. If successful, this mission will mark another significant milestone in China’s space program and contribute to humanity’s understanding of our celestial neighbor.
