In 2019, Ball was awarded a contract to develop the Space Weather Follow-On (SWFO) program. The new spacecraft, known as JPSS-3 and JPSS-4, will feature advanced sensors and instruments to improve weather forecasting accuracy and enhance our understanding of climate patterns. Orbital Micro Systems (OMS), a company specializing in advanced weather intelligence solutions, has also secured contracts with NOAA. OMS is developing a constellation of small satellites called the Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS). These satellites will collect high-resolution weather data, including temperature, humidity, and atmospheric composition, to improve weather forecasting models. By providing more accurate and timely information, GEMS will enable better predictions of severe weather events, such as hurricanes and tornadoes. NOAA’s partnership with OMS demonstrates its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies for the benefit of society.

Spire, a space-to-cloud analytics company, has been collaborating with NOAA to enhance global weather monitoring capabilities. Spire’s unique approach involves deploying a network of small satellites equipped with advanced sensors to collect atmospheric data. This data is then processed using artificial intelligence algorithms to generate highly accurate weather forecasts. In 2020, NOAA awarded Spire a contract to provide radio occultation data, which measures the bending of radio waves as they pass through Earth’s atmosphere. This data is crucial for improving weather models and enhancing our understanding of climate change.

The partnerships between NOAA and these companies highlight the importance of public-private collaborations in advancing scientific research and technological innovation. By leveraging the expertise and resources of private companies, NOAA can accelerate the development and deployment of cutting-edge technologies for weather forecasting, climate research, and environmental monitoring.
