Exploring a Chinese-constructed ‘ghost city’ in Malaysia: A firsthand account of escape

Exploring a Chinese-constructed ‘ghost city’ in Malaysia: A firsthand account of escape

In recent years, the phenomenon of Chinese-constructed ‘ghost cities’ has gained attention worldwide. These are massive urban developments built by Chinese developers in various countries, often with the intention of attracting residents and businesses. However, due to various reasons, these cities often end up deserted, earning them the eerie nickname of ‘ghost cities.’ One such city is located in Malaysia, and I had the opportunity to explore it firsthand. This is my account of the experience and my escape from this abandoned urban landscape.

The city, known as Forest City, is situated on the southern coast of Malaysia, near the border with Singapore. It was developed by Country Garden Holdings, a Chinese real estate company, with the aim of creating a futuristic metropolis that would attract both locals and foreigners. The project was marketed as a high-tech, eco-friendly city with state-of-the-art infrastructure and luxurious amenities.

As I entered Forest City, I was immediately struck by the vastness of the place. Towering skyscrapers lined the streets, but there was an eerie silence that hung in the air. The absence of people was unsettling, as if the city had been frozen in time. The streets were devoid of any signs of life, with empty shops and abandoned construction sites scattered throughout.

I began to explore the city on foot, walking through the deserted streets and marveling at the grandeur of the architecture. The buildings were impressive, with sleek designs and modern facades. However, it was clear that these structures were never occupied. The windows were dark and empty, devoid of any signs of life. It felt like a ghost town, a place that had been abandoned before it even had a chance to come alive.

As I ventured deeper into Forest City, I stumbled upon a park that was meant to be a recreational area for residents. The park was beautifully landscaped, with lush greenery and manicured gardens. However, it was completely deserted. The swings and slides stood still, untouched by the laughter of children. It was a haunting sight, a reminder of the dreams and aspirations that had been left behind.

As I continued my exploration, I came across a shopping mall that was meant to be the heart of the city. The mall was filled with high-end stores and luxury brands, but there was not a single shopper in sight. The escalators stood motionless, and the shops were empty shells. It was a stark contrast to the vibrant and bustling malls I had visited in other cities.

Feeling a sense of unease, I decided it was time to leave Forest City. As I made my way back to the entrance, I couldn’t help but wonder what had led to the downfall of this ambitious project. There were several factors that contributed to its failure. Firstly, the high property prices deterred potential buyers, both locals and foreigners. Additionally, the lack of infrastructure connecting Forest City to neighboring cities made it inconvenient for people to live or work there. Lastly, the political tensions between Malaysia and China also played a role in discouraging investment and migration to the city.

Leaving Forest City behind, I couldn’t help but reflect on the lessons learned from this experience. It served as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked development and the importance of sustainable urban planning. It also highlighted the need for thorough market research and understanding of local dynamics before embarking on such ambitious projects.

Chinese-constructed ‘ghost cities’ like Forest City are a stark reminder that grand visions and impressive architecture alone cannot guarantee the success of a city. It takes more than just buildings to create a thriving community. As I drove away from this abandoned urban landscape, I couldn’t help but hope that one day, Forest City would find its purpose and come alive with the vibrancy it was intended to have.
