Impulse Space’s Orbital Vehicle Chosen by Orbit Fab for In-Space Refueling Demonstration

Impulse Space, a California-based aerospace company, has been selected by Orbit Fab to provide the orbital vehicle for their in-space refueling demonstration. The demonstration will showcase Orbit Fab’s technology for refueling satellites and other spacecraft in orbit, which has the potential to revolutionize the space industry.

Orbit Fab is a startup that aims to create a “gas station in space” by developing technology for in-orbit refueling of satellites and other spacecraft. This technology would allow satellites to stay in orbit for longer periods of time, reducing the need for costly and time-consuming launches of replacement satellites.

Impulse Space’s orbital vehicle, called the Impulse Orbital Vehicle (IOV), is a small satellite designed for low Earth orbit missions. It is equipped with a propulsion system that allows it to maneuver in space and perform various tasks, such as deploying payloads and conducting experiments.

The IOV will be used to demonstrate Orbit Fab’s refueling technology by serving as a testbed for their fuel transfer system. The system will use a robotic arm to transfer fuel from one spacecraft to another, allowing the IOV to refuel another satellite or spacecraft in orbit.

The demonstration is scheduled to take place in 2021 and will be conducted in partnership with NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate. The goal of the demonstration is to prove the viability of Orbit Fab’s technology and pave the way for future in-space refueling missions.

In-space refueling has the potential to transform the space industry by enabling longer missions and reducing the cost of space exploration. It could also enable new types of missions, such as servicing and repairing satellites in orbit.

Impulse Space’s selection as the provider of the IOV for this demonstration is a testament to their expertise in the field of small satellite design and their commitment to advancing space technology. The company has previously worked on projects such as CubeSats and nanosatellites, and has a track record of delivering innovative solutions for space missions.

Overall, the partnership between Impulse Space and Orbit Fab represents a significant step forward in the development of in-space refueling technology. As the space industry continues to evolve, this technology could play a crucial role in enabling new missions and expanding our understanding of the universe.
