INS Vikramaditya: A Decade of Extraordinary Achievements in the Indian Navy

INS Vikramaditya: A Decade of Extraordinary Achievements in the Indian Navy

The Indian Navy has always been at the forefront of safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests. Over the years, it has continuously strived to enhance its capabilities and strengthen its fleet. One such remarkable addition to the Indian Navy’s arsenal is the INS Vikramaditya, an aircraft carrier that has completed a decade of extraordinary achievements since its induction.

Formerly known as the Admiral Gorshkov, INS Vikramaditya is a modified Kiev-class aircraft carrier that was commissioned into the Indian Navy on November 16, 2013. The ship has a rich history, having served in the Soviet Navy before being decommissioned in 1996. India signed an agreement with Russia in 2004 to acquire and refurbish the vessel, marking a significant milestone in Indo-Russian defense cooperation.

The refurbishment process was an engineering marvel, involving extensive modifications and upgrades to transform the ship into a state-of-the-art aircraft carrier. The project was undertaken by the Sevmash Shipyard in Russia, with contributions from various Indian and international companies. The ship’s flight deck was expanded, and a ski-jump ramp was added to enable the launch of fixed-wing aircraft. The propulsion system was also modernized, enhancing the ship’s speed and maneuverability.

INS Vikramaditya has a displacement of around 45,000 tons and can carry up to 30 aircraft, including MiG-29K fighter jets, Kamov helicopters, and airborne early warning aircraft. It serves as a force multiplier for the Indian Navy, significantly enhancing its reach and operational capabilities. The ship’s air wing provides aerial support for various naval operations, including anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and strike missions.

Since its induction, INS Vikramaditya has participated in numerous exercises and operations, both domestically and internationally. The ship has been a regular participant in the Malabar naval exercises, a trilateral exercise involving the navies of India, the United States, and Japan. These exercises have helped in enhancing interoperability and strengthening maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The aircraft carrier has also played a crucial role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. In 2015, it was deployed to evacuate Indian nationals from war-torn Yemen during Operation Raahat. The ship’s ability to rapidly deploy aircraft and provide logistical support proved invaluable in executing this challenging mission.

INS Vikramaditya has also been instrumental in projecting India’s maritime power and presence. It has participated in international naval events, such as the International Fleet Review held in Visakhapatnam in 2016, where it showcased its capabilities to a global audience. The ship’s presence in international waters has served as a deterrent to potential adversaries and has bolstered India’s standing as a responsible maritime power.

The successful operation of INS Vikramaditya for a decade is a testament to the Indian Navy’s commitment to modernization and operational readiness. The ship has proven its mettle in various exercises, operations, and missions, showcasing its versatility and effectiveness. Its induction has significantly enhanced the Indian Navy’s blue-water capabilities, enabling it to protect national interests across the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean.

As INS Vikramaditya enters its second decade of service, the Indian Navy continues to invest in its maintenance and upgrade to ensure its operational effectiveness for years to come. The ship remains a symbol of India’s growing naval prowess and its commitment to securing its maritime interests. With its remarkable achievements over the past decade, INS Vikramaditya stands as a shining example of India’s naval capabilities and its determination to safeguard its waters.
