Investigating the Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties of Essential Oils from Two Salvia Species: In Vitro and In Silico Analysis Targeting 1AJ6 and 1R4U Proteins

Introduction:

Essential oils derived from plants have been used for centuries for their various therapeutic properties. Among these, the Salvia genus has gained significant attention due to its potential antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. In this study, we aim to investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of essential oils extracted from two Salvia species, namely Salvia officinalis (common sage) and Salvia lavandulifolia (Spanish sage). Additionally, we will employ in vitro and in silico analysis targeting 1AJ6 and 1R4U proteins to understand the underlying mechanisms of action.

Antioxidant Properties:

Antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting cells from oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Essential oils from Salvia species have been reported to possess potent antioxidant activity. In vitro analysis will be conducted using established assays such as DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) radical scavenging assays. These assays measure the ability of the essential oils to neutralize free radicals and provide an indication of their antioxidant potential.

Antimicrobial Properties:

The antimicrobial activity of essential oils is of great interest due to the rise in antibiotic resistance. Salvia species have been traditionally used for their antimicrobial properties. In this study, we will evaluate the antimicrobial activity of essential oils from Salvia officinalis and Salvia lavandulifolia against a panel of pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal/fungicidal concentration (MBC/MFC) will be determined using standard broth microdilution methods. The results will provide insights into the potential use of these essential oils as natural antimicrobial agents.

In Silico Analysis:

To gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms of action, in silico analysis will be performed targeting 1AJ6 and 1R4U proteins. These proteins have been associated with various diseases and are potential targets for drug development. Molecular docking studies will be conducted to investigate the binding affinity of the essential oil constituents with these proteins. This analysis will provide insights into the potential therapeutic applications of the essential oils and their constituents.

Conclusion:

The investigation of the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of essential oils from Salvia officinalis and Salvia lavandulifolia is of great importance in the field of natural product research. The in vitro analysis will provide evidence of their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, while the in silico analysis targeting specific proteins will shed light on their potential therapeutic applications. The findings from this study may contribute to the development of novel antioxidant and antimicrobial agents derived from natural sources, offering alternatives to conventional drugs and promoting sustainable healthcare practices.
