Japan’s SLIM moon lander successfully completes lunar flyby

Japan’s SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon) moon lander has successfully completed a lunar flyby, marking a significant milestone in Japan’s space exploration efforts. The mission aims to develop technology for future lunar landings and contribute to international lunar exploration.

The SLIM lander, developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), was launched aboard the H-IIA rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center on September 14, 2022. After a journey of approximately four days, the spacecraft entered a lunar orbit on September 18.

During the lunar flyby, SLIM performed a series of critical maneuvers to test its navigation and guidance systems. It flew at an altitude of about 100 kilometers above the lunar surface, capturing valuable data and images of the Moon’s terrain. The successful completion of this flyby demonstrates the lander’s capability to navigate and operate in the challenging lunar environment.
