Lockheed Martin selects engine to strengthen its proposal for interim tanker for the US Air Force.

Lockheed Martin, one of the world’s leading aerospace and defense companies, has recently announced that it has selected an engine to strengthen its proposal for an interim tanker for the US Air Force. The company has chosen the CF6-80C2 engine, which is manufactured by General Electric (GE), to power its KC-10 tanker aircraft.

The KC-10 tanker is a modified version of the DC-10 commercial airliner, which has been in service with the US Air Force since the 1980s. The aircraft is used to refuel other military aircraft in mid-air, allowing them to extend their range and stay in the air for longer periods of time. The KC-10 is also capable of carrying cargo and personnel, making it a versatile asset for the military.

Lockheed Martin is currently competing with Boeing for a contract to provide the US Air Force with an interim tanker while it waits for the new KC-46 tanker to enter service. The KC-46 is being developed by Boeing and is expected to replace the aging fleet of KC-135 tankers that have been in service since the 1950s.

Lockheed Martin’s proposal for the interim tanker is based on the KC-10, which the company believes can be upgraded and modernized to meet the Air Force’s requirements. The addition of the CF6-80C2 engine is a key part of this upgrade, as it will provide improved performance and fuel efficiency compared to the current engines used on the KC-10.

The CF6-80C2 engine is a proven design that has been in service for over 30 years. It is widely used on commercial airliners such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A330, as well as military aircraft such as the C-5 Galaxy transport. The engine has a reputation for reliability and durability, which are important factors for military operations.

In addition to the engine upgrade, Lockheed Martin’s proposal for the interim tanker includes a number of other improvements to the KC-10. These include new avionics, communications systems, and refueling equipment. The company believes that these upgrades will make the KC-10 a more capable and efficient tanker, and will allow it to continue serving the Air Force for many years to come.

Lockheed Martin’s selection of the CF6-80C2 engine is a significant step forward in its bid to win the contract for the interim tanker. The company has a long history of providing aircraft and systems to the US military, and has a strong reputation for quality and reliability. If it is successful in winning the contract, it will be a major boost for the company’s business and its position in the aerospace and defense industry.
