Microsoft Issues CVE for Snipping Tool Vulnerability and Releases Patch on Store

Microsoft has recently issued a CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) for a vulnerability in the Snipping Tool, a popular screenshot tool that comes pre-installed on Windows operating systems. This vulnerability could potentially allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a victim’s system, making it a serious security concern for users.

The vulnerability, officially known as CVE-2021-31979, affects all versions of the Snipping Tool prior to the latest update, which was released on June 8th, 2021. Microsoft has advised all users to update their Snipping Tool to the latest version as soon as possible to avoid any potential security risks.

The Snipping Tool vulnerability was discovered by security researcher Jonas Lykkegaard, who reported it to Microsoft’s Security Response Center. According to Lykkegaard, the vulnerability could be exploited by an attacker who sends a specially crafted file to a victim via email or other means. If the victim opens the file using the Snipping Tool, the attacker could then execute arbitrary code on their system.

Microsoft has acknowledged the severity of the vulnerability and has released a patch for it on the Microsoft Store. The patch is available for all users running Windows 10 version 1809 or later. Users can download and install the patch by opening the Microsoft Store app and checking for updates.

In addition to releasing the patch, Microsoft has also provided some recommendations for users to protect themselves from potential attacks. These include:

– Avoid opening files from unknown or suspicious sources

– Keep your operating system and software up-to-date with the latest security patches

– Use antivirus software and keep it updated

– Enable Windows Defender Application Guard for Microsoft Edge to isolate potentially harmful websites and files

It’s important for users to take these recommendations seriously and to update their Snipping Tool as soon as possible. With cyber threats becoming increasingly sophisticated, it’s crucial for users to stay vigilant and take proactive steps to protect their systems and data.

In conclusion, the Snipping Tool vulnerability is a serious security concern for Windows users, but Microsoft has acted quickly to release a patch and provide recommendations for users to protect themselves. By staying informed and taking proactive steps to secure their systems, users can help prevent potential attacks and keep their data safe.
