Naviris and Eurosam Secure Contract for Horizon-class MLU Programme: Latest Update

Naviris, a joint venture between Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri and French defense company Naval Group, has recently secured a contract for the Horizon-class Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) program. The contract was awarded by Eurosam, a European consortium specializing in air defense systems.

The Horizon-class MLU program aims to enhance the capabilities of the Horizon-class frigates, which are currently in service with the navies of Italy and France. These frigates are known for their advanced air defense capabilities and are an integral part of the naval forces of both countries.

Under the contract, Naviris will be responsible for the design and development of the new combat system for the Horizon-class frigates. This includes the integration of new sensors, weapons systems, and communication equipment to enhance the frigates’ operational effectiveness.

The MLU program is crucial for maintaining the frigates’ relevance in modern naval warfare scenarios. As technology advances rapidly, it is essential to upgrade existing platforms to keep up with evolving threats and maintain a competitive edge.

The Horizon-class frigates were initially designed to counter air threats, including aircraft and missiles. However, with the changing nature of warfare, the need for enhanced capabilities has become evident. The MLU program will address these requirements by incorporating state-of-the-art technologies and systems.

Naviris brings together the expertise of Fincantieri and Naval Group, two leading European shipbuilders with extensive experience in naval defense projects. This joint venture allows for the pooling of resources, knowledge, and skills to deliver innovative solutions for complex naval programs.

Eurosam’s selection of Naviris for this contract highlights the trust and confidence placed in the joint venture’s capabilities. Eurosam is a consortium formed by MBDA, a European leader in missile systems, and Thales, a global technology company specializing in defense and security solutions.

The collaboration between Naviris and Eurosam will ensure that the Horizon-class frigates remain at the forefront of air defense capabilities. The new combat system will provide enhanced situational awareness, improved target detection and tracking, and increased firepower.

The MLU program will also focus on reducing the frigates’ lifecycle costs and improving their sustainability. This includes the integration of energy-efficient systems, optimized maintenance processes, and the use of environmentally friendly materials.

The Horizon-class frigates have proven their worth in various international operations, including counter-piracy missions and air defense operations. The MLU program will further enhance their operational capabilities, ensuring that they remain a vital asset for the navies of Italy and France for years to come.

In addition to the immediate benefits for the navies involved, the Naviris-Eurosam collaboration also contributes to the broader European defense industry. By leveraging the expertise of multiple European companies, the program strengthens Europe’s defense capabilities and promotes collaboration among member states.

The Horizon-class MLU program represents a significant milestone in naval defense cooperation between Italy and France. It showcases the commitment of both countries to invest in their naval forces and maintain a strong defense posture.

As the Naviris-Eurosam partnership progresses with the Horizon-class MLU program, it is expected to pave the way for future collaborations and joint ventures in the European defense industry. This will not only benefit the participating companies but also contribute to the overall security and stability of Europe.
