Physics World, the leading international magazine for physics, has announced the recipients of the 2023 Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund was established in 2018 to support women and other underrepresented groups in physics by providing financial assistance to pursue graduate studies in the field.
The scholarship is named after Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a pioneering astrophysicist who discovered pulsars in 1967. Despite her groundbreaking discovery, Bell Burnell faced discrimination and was not awarded the Nobel Prize for her work. In response, she donated her prize money to establish the Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund.
This year, the scholarship fund received over 200 applications from around the world. After a rigorous selection process, six recipients were chosen to receive the scholarship. The recipients are:
1. Aisha Ahmed, a Pakistani student who will be pursuing a PhD in theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge.
2. Ana Maria Cepeda, a Colombian student who will be pursuing a PhD in experimental particle physics at the University of Manchester.
3. Dina Elsherif, an Egyptian student who will be pursuing a PhD in astrophysics at the University of Edinburgh.
4. Kavya Gupta, an Indian student who will be pursuing a PhD in condensed matter physics at the University of California, Berkeley.
5. Nourhan Ibrahim, an Egyptian student who will be pursuing a PhD in theoretical physics at the University of Oxford.
6. Yara Shalaby, an Egyptian student who will be pursuing a PhD in experimental particle physics at the University of Sussex.
The scholarship covers tuition fees and living expenses for up to three years of graduate study. In addition, recipients will have access to mentorship and networking opportunities through the Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund community.
The recipients of the scholarship expressed their gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to pursue their studies without financial burden. They also acknowledged the significance of the scholarship in promoting diversity and inclusion in physics.
The Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund is a testament to the importance of supporting underrepresented groups in STEM fields. By providing financial assistance and mentorship, the scholarship aims to break down barriers and create a more equitable and diverse community of physicists. Congratulations to the 2023 recipients of the Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund!
