Second Day of Flight Cancellations by British Airways Due to IT Outage

On May 28, 2017, British Airways (BA) experienced a major IT outage that caused the cancellation of all flights from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports. The outage affected BA’s check-in systems, baggage handling, and flight operations, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and causing chaos at the airports.

The airline initially hoped to resume flights on May 28, but the IT outage persisted, forcing BA to cancel all flights for the day. On May 29, the airline announced that it would cancel all short-haul flights from Heathrow and Gatwick airports for the day, but hoped to operate long-haul flights as scheduled.

The second day of flight cancellations by BA due to the IT outage caused further disruption and frustration for passengers. Many travelers were left stranded at the airports or forced to find alternative transportation, while others had to cancel or postpone their travel plans altogether.

The IT outage was caused by a power surge that affected BA’s computer systems, according to the airline. BA’s CEO, Alex Cruz, apologized for the disruption and promised to fully investigate the cause of the outage.

The incident highlights the importance of IT systems in the airline industry and the potential impact of system failures on passengers and operations. It also raises questions about BA’s IT infrastructure and contingency plans for such events.

BA is not the first airline to experience a major IT outage. In 2016, Delta Air Lines suffered a similar outage that caused widespread flight cancellations and delays. The incident cost Delta an estimated $150 million in lost revenue and compensation to affected passengers.

In response to the BA outage, some experts have called for greater investment in IT infrastructure and contingency planning by airlines. They argue that airlines must prioritize the reliability and resilience of their IT systems to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Overall, the second day of flight cancellations by BA due to the IT outage was a frustrating experience for passengers and a reminder of the importance of IT systems in the airline industry. It remains to be seen how BA will address the issue and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
