Southwest Airlines makes further adjustments to its reward program

Southwest Airlines, one of the leading low-cost carriers in the United States, has recently announced further adjustments to its reward program. These changes aim to enhance the overall customer experience and provide more flexibility for loyal Southwest flyers.

One of the key adjustments is the introduction of a new tier called A-List Preferred. This tier will sit above the existing A-List tier and offer additional benefits to frequent flyers. Members of A-List Preferred will enjoy priority boarding, free same-day standby, and a 100% earning bonus on all flights. This means that for every flight taken, members will earn double the points compared to regular passengers.

In addition to the new tier, Southwest Airlines is also making changes to its Companion Pass program. The Companion Pass allows a designated companion to fly for free with the pass holder on any Southwest flight. Previously, customers had to earn 125,000 qualifying points or fly 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year to obtain the Companion Pass. However, starting from January 1, 2022, Southwest will introduce a new requirement. Customers will need to earn 125,000 qualifying points or fly 100 qualifying one-way flights AND spend $15,000 on Southwest flights or Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards in a calendar year to qualify for the Companion Pass.

While this change may seem like an additional hurdle for customers, it aims to reward those who not only fly frequently but also spend a significant amount with Southwest Airlines. The airline hopes that this adjustment will encourage customers to choose Southwest for all their travel needs and maximize their rewards.

Furthermore, Southwest Airlines is introducing a new feature called “Points Pooling.” This feature allows Rapid Rewards members to combine their points with up to 10 other members, including friends and family. This means that if one member doesn’t have enough points for a desired reward, they can pool their points with others to reach the required amount. This feature is particularly beneficial for families or groups traveling together, as it allows them to collectively earn and redeem rewards.

Southwest Airlines is also making changes to its expiration policy. Previously, Rapid Rewards points expired after 24 months of account inactivity. However, starting from January 1, 2022, Southwest will no longer have an expiration policy for points. This change ensures that customers can accumulate points over time without the fear of losing them due to inactivity.

Overall, these adjustments to Southwest Airlines’ reward program aim to provide more value and flexibility to its loyal customers. The introduction of the A-List Preferred tier, changes to the Companion Pass requirements, Points Pooling feature, and the removal of the expiration policy all contribute to enhancing the customer experience and rewarding frequent flyers. Southwest Airlines continues to prioritize customer satisfaction and aims to remain a top choice for travelers seeking affordable and rewarding air travel options.
