Starting January 1st, Illinois mandates EV charging at rental properties – CleanTechnica reports

Starting January 1st, 2022, a new mandate in Illinois will require rental properties to provide electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. This move is part of the state’s efforts to promote the adoption of electric vehicles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CleanTechnica reports that this mandate will have a significant impact on the accessibility and convenience of EV charging for renters in Illinois.

The new regulation applies to all residential rental properties with five or more units. Landlords will be required to install and maintain EV charging stations in their parking lots or garages. The number of charging stations needed will depend on the size of the property, with a minimum requirement of one charging station for every 20 parking spaces.

This mandate is a crucial step towards addressing one of the major barriers to EV adoption – the lack of accessible charging infrastructure, especially for those living in multi-unit buildings. By making EV charging more readily available at rental properties, Illinois aims to encourage more residents to switch to electric vehicles, ultimately reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving air quality.

The benefits of this mandate extend beyond just the renters themselves. With more EV charging stations available, it will also attract potential EV owners who may have been hesitant due to limited charging options. This increased demand for EVs will further drive the growth of the electric vehicle market in Illinois, leading to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation sector.

Furthermore, this mandate aligns with Illinois’ broader clean energy goals. The state has set ambitious targets to decarbonize its transportation sector, aiming for 1 million electric vehicles on its roads by 2030. By requiring rental properties to provide EV charging infrastructure, Illinois is taking a proactive approach to support this transition and ensure that charging infrastructure keeps pace with the growing number of EVs on the road.

To assist landlords in complying with the new regulation, various incentives and programs are available. For instance, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency offers grants to help cover the costs of installing EV charging stations. Additionally, federal tax credits and other financial incentives are available to offset the expenses associated with EV charging infrastructure installation.

While this mandate is a significant step forward, it also raises some challenges. Landlords will need to consider the costs of installing and maintaining charging stations, as well as potential changes to their electrical infrastructure. However, the long-term benefits, such as attracting environmentally conscious tenants and contributing to a greener future, outweigh these initial investments.

Illinois’ decision to mandate EV charging at rental properties sets an example for other states and jurisdictions to follow. By prioritizing accessibility and convenience, Illinois is paving the way for a more sustainable transportation future. As electric vehicles become increasingly popular, it is crucial for governments and stakeholders to work together to ensure that charging infrastructure keeps up with the growing demand. With this new regulation, Illinois is taking a significant step towards achieving a cleaner and greener transportation sector.
