Unauthorised use of safety switch causes 737 freighter to fail pressurisation

On August 3, 2021, a Boeing 737 freighter operated by Kalitta Air experienced a pressurization failure during a flight from Hong Kong to Anchorage. The incident was caused by the unauthorised use of a safety switch, which resulted in the aircraft’s cargo hold door not being properly secured.

The safety switch in question is known as the “override switch,” which is used to bypass the cargo hold door’s safety interlock system. This system is designed to prevent the door from being opened during flight, which could result in a loss of pressurization and potentially catastrophic consequences.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the override switch should only be used in emergency situations, and only by trained personnel. In this case, it appears that the switch was used by an unauthorised individual, resulting in the cargo hold door not being properly secured.

As a result of the pressurization failure, the pilots were forced to descend to a lower altitude and divert to Tokyo, where the aircraft landed safely. There were no injuries reported among the crew or passengers.

The incident highlights the importance of following proper procedures and protocols when operating aircraft. Unauthorised use of safety equipment can have serious consequences, as demonstrated in this case.

The FAA has issued a warning to all operators of Boeing 737 aircraft to ensure that their crews are properly trained on the use of safety equipment and that all procedures are followed correctly. The agency has also launched an investigation into the incident to determine if any regulatory violations occurred.

In addition to the FAA’s investigation, Kalitta Air has launched its own internal investigation into the incident. The company has stated that it takes safety very seriously and will take appropriate action to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Overall, the unauthorised use of a safety switch on a Boeing 737 freighter resulted in a pressurization failure and forced an emergency landing. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following proper procedures and protocols when operating aircraft, and the potential consequences of not doing so.
