Low bypass turbofan engines typically have a bypass ratio of less than 5:1. The remaining air passes through the combustion chamber, where fuel is burned to produce additional thrust. On the other hand, high bypass turbofan engines have a bypass ratio greater than 5:1, often reaching as high as 10:1 or more. This bypass air contributes to a significant portion of the total thrust generated by the engine. The combustion air that passes through the core is responsible for driving the turbine and powering the compressor.
