Unifor, Canadian union, reaches tentative deal with Stellantis, ending strike – Autoblog

Unifor, the largest private-sector union in Canada, has reached a tentative agreement with Stellantis, the multinational automotive company formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group. This agreement brings an end to the strike that began on September 27th, 2021, and will have a significant impact on the Canadian automotive industry.

The strike, which affected Stellantis’ assembly plant in Windsor, Ontario, was primarily driven by concerns over job security and the future of electric vehicle (EV) production in Canada. Unifor had been pushing for commitments from Stellantis to invest in EV production at the Windsor plant, as well as secure new product allocations to ensure the long-term viability of the facility.

The tentative deal, which still needs to be ratified by union members, addresses many of these concerns. According to Unifor President Jerry Dias, the agreement includes a $1.3 billion investment from Stellantis to retool the Windsor plant for EV production. This investment is expected to create around 2,000 new jobs and secure the future of the facility.

Furthermore, the agreement also includes a commitment from Stellantis to allocate new products to the Windsor plant beyond the current production cycle. This is a crucial aspect of the deal as it ensures that the plant will continue to operate and contribute to the Canadian economy for years to come.

The agreement between Unifor and Stellantis is significant not only for the workers at the Windsor plant but also for the Canadian automotive industry as a whole. It demonstrates that there is a commitment from major automakers to invest in EV production in Canada, which aligns with the country’s goal of becoming a global leader in clean transportation.

Canada has been actively working towards attracting EV manufacturing investments, offering various incentives and support programs to encourage companies to choose Canada as their production base. The agreement between Unifor and Stellantis serves as a testament to the success of these efforts and the potential for growth in the EV sector.

The Windsor plant, which currently produces minivans, will now be retooled to manufacture electric vehicles based on Stellantis’ new platform. This transition will not only secure jobs but also position the plant at the forefront of EV production in North America.

The agreement also includes provisions for wage increases, improved benefits, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion within the workforce. These aspects are crucial for ensuring fair and equitable working conditions for union members.

Overall, the tentative deal between Unifor and Stellantis marks a significant milestone for the Canadian automotive industry. It demonstrates the potential for growth in the EV sector and highlights the importance of collaboration between unions and automakers to secure a prosperous future for workers and the industry as a whole.

As the automotive industry continues to undergo rapid transformation towards electrification, agreements like this one serve as a blueprint for how unions and companies can work together to navigate these changes successfully. The investment in EV production at the Windsor plant not only secures jobs but also positions Canada as a key player in the global shift towards sustainable transportation.
