Why Educators Should Prioritize Self-Compassion Over Self-Care.

As educators, we often hear about the importance of self-care. We are told to take time for ourselves, to practice mindfulness, and to engage in activities that bring us joy. While these practices can certainly be helpful, there is another approach that may be even more beneficial: self-compassion.

Self-compassion is the practice of treating ourselves with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, especially in times of difficulty or failure. It involves recognizing that we are human and that we all make mistakes, and it means responding to ourselves with the same warmth and care that we would offer to a friend.

So why should educators prioritize self-compassion over self-care? Here are a few reasons:

1. Self-compassion is more sustainable.

Self-care can sometimes feel like just another item on our to-do list. We may feel like we have to carve out time for it, or that we need to engage in specific activities in order to feel better. While these practices can be helpful in the short-term, they may not be sustainable over the long haul.

Self-compassion, on the other hand, is something we can practice in any moment. We can offer ourselves kindness and understanding even when we don’t have time for a full self-care routine. And because self-compassion is about cultivating a mindset of acceptance and care, it can help us weather difficult times more easily.

2. Self-compassion helps us bounce back from failure.

As educators, we know that failure is a natural part of the learning process. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy to deal with. When we experience setbacks or make mistakes, it’s easy to fall into self-criticism and self-blame.

Self-compassion can help us break out of this cycle. By treating ourselves with kindness and understanding, we can acknowledge our mistakes without getting bogged down in shame or guilt. This can help us bounce back more quickly and with greater resilience.

3. Self-compassion can improve our relationships with students.

When we practice self-compassion, we become more attuned to our own emotions and needs. This can help us be more present and empathetic with our students, and can help us respond to their needs with greater care and understanding.

Additionally, when we model self-compassion for our students, we can help them develop these skills as well. By showing them that it’s okay to make mistakes and that they deserve kindness and understanding, we can create a more supportive and compassionate learning environment.

In conclusion, while self-care is certainly important, educators should prioritize self-compassion as a foundational practice. By treating ourselves with kindness and understanding, we can cultivate greater resilience, improve our relationships with students, and create a more sustainable approach to self-care.
