The Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA) recently announced their support for the federal legalization and regulation of recreational marijuana use. This is a significant move for the organization, which represents the wholesale distribution tier of the alcohol industry in the United States.

The WSWA’s decision to support federal legalization comes as more and more states are legalizing marijuana for both medicinal and recreational use. Currently, 36 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana, while 15 states and the District of Columbia have legalized recreational marijuana.

In a press release, the WSWA stated that they believe “the time has come for the federal government to take action to legalize, regulate and tax marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol.” The organization also noted that they believe federal legalization would “ensure product safety, enable consumer choice, and provide state and local governments with an additional source of revenue.”

The WSWA’s support for federal legalization is significant because it represents a shift in attitude within the alcohol industry. Historically, the alcohol industry has been opposed to marijuana legalization, fearing that it would cut into their profits. However, as more states have legalized marijuana, some in the alcohol industry have begun to see it as a potential new revenue stream.

In addition to the potential financial benefits of federal legalization, the WSWA also cited public safety concerns as a reason for their support. They noted that legalization would allow for better regulation of marijuana products, ensuring that they are safe and free from harmful contaminants.

Despite the WSWA’s support, there are still many obstacles to federal legalization. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law, and it is unclear when or if Congress will take action to change that. Additionally, there are concerns about how legalization would be implemented and regulated at the federal level.

However, the WSWA’s support for federal legalization is a significant step forward in the ongoing debate over marijuana legalization in the United States. As more organizations and individuals come out in support of legalization, it seems increasingly likely that federal legalization will eventually become a reality.
